BTEA is an online, multiple-choice test which assesses a candidate’s English ability for benchmarking / diagnostic purposes. The test assesses a candidate’s knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and listening comprehension skills. It does not attempt to assess a candidate’s spoken English. This means that it cannot be used for licensing purposes but it can be a simple, cheap and fast way of assessing a large number of people in order to determine their training needs.
You will need the latest version of Adobe Flash Player (free download here).
The test contains listening exercises so you will need to check that your headphones are working correctly.
How should the test be delivered?
Ideally the test should be delivered under secure conditions. The employer (the airline, ATS provider, Flightschool etc.) will be responsible for checking identity documents and for ensuring that candidates have a maximum of 45 minutes to complete the test.Individual pilots and controllers can also take the test independently in order to assess their own level.
How is the test scored?
The candidate receives points for each correct answer and zero points for each incorrect answer (there is no “negative marking”). For each question there is only one correct answer. Users receive a percentage score and the corresponding ICAO level score.
